15/01: A Waitaki Man

Category: Family notes

My father, like all his brothers bar one, went to Waitaki Boys High in North Otago and were school boys during the famed reign of Frank Milner - one of the higher profile education figures in New Zealand. The recent obituary of Russell Drew - a pupil and much admired teacher of Waikiki - referred to Milner's idea of a "Waitaki man" as one who "strived to achieve with all-round purpose, in the classroom and on the sports field and in wider society". Mr Russell was, it should be said, considered to be a true Waitaki man.

I did not know Mr Drew but the reference to Milner and his ideas is of interest since Dad often referred to Milner and his concepts with considerable respect and as being the foundation of much which could improve the world. This description provides a good idea of what he was likely referring to.

Injured Kallis out-thinks India
Jacques Kallis faced more adversity on the fourth day than he did in the first innings and came up trumps again, winning the mental battle against the Indians

Sidharth Monga at Newlands

January 5, 2011

Jacques Kallis makes everything look smooth: be it batting, bowling or catching at slip. He has this cool air about him. A man who knows he is good at what he does, a man who knows he looks graceful when he does what he knows he is good at. Sometimes he can even give the impression that he is not even stretching himself to the fullest. It comes across the most when, at times, he gets off to a quick start, and then settles down into accumulation mode as opposed to domination. It is still a pleasure to watch him because he does things beautifully. The real joy, though, comes when you put him on a bad pitch, or in a pressure situation, asking him to stretch himself, to show you all he has got.

Dad wished to be cremated and have his ashes interred in our garden, here in his beloved Dunedin. And so... this is the rose - Loving Memory it happens to be called, and given to us by Rosemary's co workers at Southern Audiology when Dad died, which sits along side him in a north facing spot in our garden.

Dad's rose....

For the occasion it flowered....
